Progress

Pictures below show something new and something old, though the something new has actually been aged...what's this about??

The bundle pictured has been left exposed to the weather since september 2011.
You can see pictures of it back then here.
I'll be letting this bundle of paper and stuff dry out and then I'll use pieces from it as collage elements in future acrylic/collage works.
My previous series of acrylic/collage works using aged materials from a bundle can be found here.

The other pictures show some paper which I made about 6 years ago now. These were made and exhibited before I was showing any artwork on the internet...so I thought I would put them here now.

Latest works are vintage!

It feels a little like I haven't been being arty in 2012...but of course that's not really the case. I've created and submitted two entries for Blarney Books Biblioart competition....I'll show them in their entirety closer to exhibiton date. I also made my unusual sketchbook and sent it off to Arthouse. It will be back in Melbourne in November and that will be very exciting.

Apart from those things I have been doing quite a bit of singing...which makes me very happy (so I am hoping there will be more).

But ....feeling like I needed to do something visual and arty, I revisited some photographs which took more than a year ago and gave them a going over. I've come up with a few more to add to this collection of vintage images.

These have all been created by digitally photographing projected images...vintage slides and moving pictures taken by my father, his mother and probably other unknown family friends. They date from the early 1950's and capture the style of the era. I love the natural aging and fungus. Most of these have had very little done to them  by way of post processing (other than cropping...and not all have even been cropped!)

2 months of 2012...what have I been doing?

I have been working on things...but not ones I can make public just yet.

During January I did a lot of singing (which made me very happy...but it still wasn't enough singing for me!) here is one piece...

I also produced two competition pieces, something different for me in that these were just plain old boring paintings ; )
...I'm only giving out tiny previews at the moment...

cardboard, glue and going from square to round.

Christmas is closing in and, while I still have deadlines before then, they are not construction type ones.
This hasn't stopped me from constructing though... it is very hard for me to stop making things!

I've been working on a couple of things. One is making my own glue and gluesticks and the other is making round boxes of a different type to my folded ones (and using my own glue to hold them together).

I'm also sourcing some large packaging so that in the new year I can make some more of my cardboard and fabric canvases and get painting again. Today I found a box from a huge TV....only just fitted it in the car...that should make a few pictures!

So...watch out for updates on round boxes, home made glue and huge cardboard paintings!

...and here is a preview of the round boxes to come...

Another expedition into late night paint brought me to this bird falling off a rock...I can see progress here both in subject and construction.

I think I have finally perfected my construction techniques for the base canvas and I'm pleased to see the addition of the rock or mountain top as an element in the composition. Maybe I'll go architectural next!!

My Sphinx

Following on rather quickly from my mythology series is another mythological work in a similar vein.
Without a doubt this was inspired by the Gustav Moreau exhibition not so long ago at the NGV …
there is quite a thing at the moment with portraying human bodies with animal heads…think people with cat or dog faces or lions heads…you’ll find them all around  in photoshop and illustration work…
in classical mythology and its retellings we find the animal bodies with human heads, think centaurs and sphinxes…I’ve been wanting to tackle this theme and even tried to photoshop my head onto my cat’s body (unsuccessfully!)

Today I tackled a large canvas using the same technique as for my recent mythology series…some collage of weathered materials, some scribbly painting, trying very hard not to draw anything until something just pops up. In this one the hint of a mouth could be seen after a while and the eye (which apart from the black line is just a collage piece.

I’m so pleased and excited to have produced this strong character, the woman who eats people when they can’t answer the riddle! I love her twisted Escher-like body. This is a Greek Sphinx, winged and woman. She is far too precious to sell in original form.
Original is mixed media (acrylic and paper on fabric and cardboard) 57 x 74 cm approx.
Available as cards and prints.

I've finished the series (see previous posts), sadly, really, because it would have been fun to keep creating such wonderful creatures....but I have run out of canvases and feel very happy with the final character...

The six works here together are only available in print form at the moment...it is far too soon for me to part with them (if ever I could!)

They are from top left to right
Masked Thief, Sweet Kimono, Heavy Load,

and from left to right on bottom row
Dancing Cricket,
Fancy Cape,
Pure Freedom.

They are all mixed media (acrylic, pastel and paper on fabric and cardboard) and while varying slightly are approximately 37 x 57cm.

A little story about them all can also be found here

Enquiries welcome

I have worked very quickly on my latest series of collage/paintings (see previous post) and have created 3 more characters from the depths of my imagination. I had no idea what would appear!  I only have one more to do to complete the set...then I will need to make some wall space to be able to display them all together. These have been a great experience...now I would just like to tackle a series of larger canvases!
More pictures of the originals here where they are also available in a variety of print forms (cards, framed, canvas)
